GOAL Humanitarian School Award

13th May 2019

The GOAL Humanitarian School Award was set up to inspire humanitarianism in primary and secondary schools and recognise work carried out by students and teachers.

To be humanitarian means to promote human welfare and well-being. It means we are concerned about others in the world.

To achieve this award, we worked with GOAL in learning about Drought and Migration in Ethiopia. Mura, a GOAL worker came to visit us and taught about the realities of life in a rural Ethiopian community affected by drought.

We explored the themes of poverty, drought and migration through drama. We had great fun and became much more aware of how other people have to live.

As well this workshop we also helped the work of GOAL by taking part in Jersey Day last October. Our school raised the amazing total of €565 which will make a great difference to the lives of people in GOAL’s partner countries.

This year 72 schools in Ireland have been awarded the GOAL Humanitarian Award; we are one of 12 Donegal schools who have received this award. Our school name has now been added to the GOAL Humanitarian Schools Roll of Honour

This work is closely linked to our Green Schools work this year on Global Citizenship, Energy; it is also linked to the work we completed for the Our World, Irish Aid Awards and the Compassionate School Award we are working towards at the present time with Children in Crossfire.
